About Afghanistan Forensic Science Organization (AFSO)

AFSO is governed by the board of directors, the board of advisors, and the professional team that evaluates, designs, and implements project activities. Currently, AFSO has 7 full-time paid staff in three different departments 1) Administration and Finance 2) Program 3) Research and Communications.

  1. Mohammad Zaman Khoshnam, Executive Director, who holds a Master of Arts in International Relations from South Asian University is one of AFSO’s co-founders. He has 13 years of experience in project management and program development, research, and innovative grassroots work in human rights programs and research with a focus on gender issues, institution building, and transitional justice. Mr. Khoshnam also holds a certificate in Management and Leadership from the Afghanistan Civil Service Institute. He is one of the former Peace Studies lecturers at Gawharshad University. He has been engaged with various donors, international organizations, foundations, and academic centers both nationally and internationally. He is currently focused on the existing programs and the organization’s daily operations.
  2. Dr. Mohammad Nader Wardak, Project Coordinator and Forensic Expert, has a Master’s degree from Kabul Medical University. Dr. Wardak has been a lecturer of forensic medicine in more than 12 universities in Afghanistan. He was a former Forensic Science Lecturer at the Forensic Department of the Police Academy, a Doctor in the Internal Department at 300-bed the Hospital, and former President of Khatam-ul-Nabein Medical Hospital. He is also one of AFSO’s co-founders. He coordinates overall project issues in Kabul and provinces internally. Additionally, he organizes workshops, seminars, training, and symposiums, prepares training materials, and conducts events.
  1. Mohammad Haroon Asghari, Project Manager at AFSO, Mohammad Haroon Asghari graduated from Kabul Polytechnic University, Faculty of Engineering. His research area is Forensic Engineering. He has a certificate in Management and Leadership from the Management and Leadership Educational Organization. He started working with the Green Tech Construction Company as a design engineer. He has also long experience as a Project Manager with ACCL International. On January 2023 he joined AFSO as Project Manager.
  2. Mohammad Taqi Azar, Finance Officer at AFSO, holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance from COMSATS University, Islamabad, Pakistan, and he is a part-qualified Associate of Chartered Accountants (ACCA) student. Mr. Azar has many years of experience in accounting, finance, taxation policy, and auditing with various national and international organizations in Afghanistan.
  1. Zahra Muhammadi, AFSO’s Program Officer and Legal Trainer has a Master of Arts in International Relations from Avicenna University and a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Political Science from Balkh University. She has a decade of work experience in human rights, gender-based violence, human trafficking, women’s rights, forensic science, and social work. Ms. Muhammadi has taught law and international relations at private universities in Kabul and Balkh provinces. Additionally, she has extensive experience in planning, program development, research, and reporting.
  2. Sanaullah Hafizi is AFSO’s Human Resources and Logistics Officer. He has an undergraduate degree in law and stomatology respectively. In addition, Mr. Hafizi has also served as a lecturer at various institutes of higher education in Kabul, Afghanistan.
  3. Payam Ali Naderi, Project Consultant, has many years of working with Afghan Civil Society Organizations across various projects from peacebuilding, education, social entrepreneurship, and development. He has also had lectureship positions at private universities in Kabul, Afghanistan. Mr. Naderi holds a Bachelor’s in Business Management and a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Business from Bangalore University and Mount Carmel College, Bangalore, India respectively. Currently, assists the core team at AFSO in project proposal development, research, and reporting.

 

Mission Statement

As the sole forensic science organization in Afghanistan, AFSO’s mission is to promote and enhance the use of quality forensic science in Afghanistan. AFSO is dedicated to helping governmental and civil society organizations in forensic science research and practice. In addition, AFSO seeks to safeguard human rights by utilizing modern forensic science tools and technology to monitor, evaluate, analyze, and document instances of violation. AFSO strives to empower public and private university students through capacity-building programs, fostering their knowledge in the areas of human rights and the rule of law.

Vision Statement

Becoming a forensic science center to document human rights violations from a scientific perspective and provide expert opinion to all public and private sectors in Afghanistan.

Main Goals

The Afghanistan Forensic Science Organization is committed to safeguarding human rights, promoting the use of forensic science, and documenting human rights violations all over Afghanistan.

  • Promoting the use of Forensic Science and Forensic Evidence in criminal trial procedures
  • Identification, registration, and protection of mass graves and disappeared persons
  • Memorialization and documentation of human rights violations
  • Documenting human rights violations across Afghanistan
  • Capacity-building of governmental agencies and civil society organizations in the use of forensic science
  • Providing educational opportunities to students from various walks of life
